We specialize in organ preservation for tongue cancer

Tongue cancer organ preserving treatment @PPUSMB

At Advanced Brachytherapy Clinic @PPUSMB, we have a comprehensive team and dedicated specialists specializing in the organ preservation treatment and research for tongue cancers. Since the implementation of the novel HyBIRT (Hybrid Brachytherapy followed-by IMRT) technique developed by PPUSMB team in 2017, a total of 58 patients have been successfully treated with this procedure till date. An impressive local control rate in the tongue of 95% has been achieved and these results has been presented as a proffered paper in the 2023 European Society for Radiation Oncology (ESTRO2023) Annual Scientific Meeting.

While surgical resection to remove the tongue tumor followed by tissue reconstruction (FLAP) in some and radiotherapy is the current standard of care in the treatment of tongue cancer, not all patients are suitable for surgery due to surgical fitness or the extend of the tumor. A significant proportion of patients also refuse surgical options given to them due to the functional and cosmetic outcome, and also the morbidity associated with surgery. At PPUSMB we believe in offering an optimal treatment to these group of patients who refuse or unsuitable for surgery. Our dedicated team of multidisciplinary specialists also had been actively involved in the research on how to reduce the toxicity associated with this HyBIRT treatment while ensuring that the good local cancer control rate achieved in the tongue itself is not compromised.

PPUSMB is also a global training centre for BrachyAcademy since 2020 we have fellows from Singapore and Indonesia undergoing part time training here. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has also sponsored radiation oncologist and medical physicist to undergo brachytherapy training here in PPUSMB.

Dedicated hospital staff, friendly environment and patient centric approach coupled with highest level of professionalism is what patients can expect at PPUSMB.
