Associate Professor (Dr) Gokula studied medicine at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and pursued his specialist training in 2008, during which time he worked at the Singapore National University Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Cancer Centre, Singapore and subsequently William Buckland Radiotherapy Centre, Alfred Health, Melbourne to complete the compulsory 5-year Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) Consultant Radiation Oncologist training programme. He was awarded the Fellowship in Radiation Oncology (FRANZCR) by RANZCR in 2013.
Prof. Gokula was the first Australian (FRANZCR) trained Radiation Oncologist to practice as Consultant Radiation Oncologist in Malaysia. His primary interest is head&neck/tongue brachytherapy, liver brachytherapy, gastrointestinal brachytherapy, low dose rate interstitial seed brachytherapy for prostate cancers, gynaecological brachytherapy (interstitial and intracavitary) and also conformal/intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) / Linac based stereotactic radiotherapy. Prof. Gokula’s publication includes international citation indexed journals and has contributed vastly to the field of Brachytherapy and Radiation Oncology.  The Hybrid Brachytherapy followed by Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (HyBIRT) for tongue preservation technique in tongue cancer treatment is a novel method developed by USMBMC team lead by Prof. Gokula.

Prof. Gokula is currently working in Radiotherapy & Oncology unit at USM Bertam Medical Centre (PPUSMB), Penang and also Visiting Consultant Radiation Oncologist at Penang Adventist Hospital. He has been invited speaker at many international radiotherapy conferences that include Australasian Brachytherapy Group (ABG), Federation of Asian Radiation Oncology (FARO), BrachyAcademy talks and also presented a proffered paper at ESTRO 2023 on his tongue brachytherapy work. Prof. Gokula is the current President of Malaysian Brachytherapy Society (MBS).
